Top Causes of Drywall Damage

Most homes use drywall because it’s sturdy and easy to work with. There are several factors, however, that can damage it. From small cracks to large holes, unsightly drywall problems can affect your room’s beauty. Fortunately, such issues are quick and inexpensive to fix.

Drywall Damage

Handyman Connection® of Knightdale discusses some of the top causes of drywall damage and how we can solve them:

Nail Pops

Nail pops usually occur if the house settles or the wood framing begins to shrink. They may also happen if nails or screws aren’t firmly driven into the center of the joist or stud. Regardless of the cause, the repair is the same. We fix the issue by yanking out the popped nail with pliers. Once we find the exact center of the stud or joist, we drive drywall screws below the surface. Afterward, we apply a joint compound, then sand, prime and paint the drywall.

Loose Joint Tape

Pieces of paper tape cover the seams between the drywall sheets, and these can pull loose and peel from the wall over time. While this can take place in any room, this often happens in high-moisture areas like bathrooms. We remedy this problem by using a utility knife to cut the loose tape. We then spread a layer of joint compound over the exposed joint and put on a new strip of paper tape. Once dry, we sand, prime and paint the affected area.

Small Holes

There are several ways to cause a dent or a small hole on part of the wall. Maybe someone opened a door, and the doorknob hit the wall. Or your child decided to hit the wall with a toy using enough force to cause a hole or a dent. We repair this issue by carving pieces of paper or gypsum and applying mesh joint tape in a cross-shaped pattern. We then cover the area with joint compound and sand the high spots. We repeat the process until we achieve a smooth patch over the hole.
