How to Clean Your Dishwasher Properly

The last thing you want to happen to your dishwasher is for it to fail when you’re just about to finish the last two plates. But don’t worry; you can easily solve most dishwasher problems by just cleaning it. Handyman Connection of Knightdale discusses how to properly clean your dishwasher.

Create the Cleaning Mixture

Skip the chemicals and look for the following to create your own homemade dishwasher cleaning solution:

– Distilled white vinegar

– Baking Soda

– Dish Soap

You’ll also want the following tools:

– a sponge

– a screwdriver hex wrench

– a toothpick or an old, empty pen

– a soft rag

– a multipurpose cleaner

The First Steps

First, you’ll want to empty the contents of your dishwasher. It’s best to do this after completing a wash cycle. Then, you’ll want to remove the racks and make sure to clear the spinning holes of any dirt, debris, or pieces of food. Use a toothpick or anything small with a point to clear away the debris caught in the spinning arm.

Next, you want to wipe the bottom of the door and the dishwasher grating. These areas often attract a lot of dirt and debris since in some models, the water can’t actually reach the bottom of the door or the grating. Simply wipe this area clean with dish soap and wash it with warm water.

Washing the Filter

If your dishwasher model has a filter, you’ll want to remove it and disassemble it. It’s better to wash each part separately since dirt can easily get in between the small crevices of each part. We recommend you soak the parts in the sink while you clean the utensil rack of the dishwasher.

After that, you’ll want to run your dishwasher with vinegar. Just two cups of vinegar for one cycle is enough to get rid of hard water deposits. Finally, all that’s left is to wash and polish the dishwasher. Reassemble and reinstall the filter and wash it with warm water.
